What is psychodynamic counselling?
Psychodynamic counselling is a style of therapy based on psychoanalysis, which offers many of the same benefits. It helps us work through our problems by really understanding ourselves and our relationships with others, looking deeply into why things might not be working well for us right now, and making sense of things when we feel overwhelmed or confused.
But unlike psychoanalysis, it is accessible and welcoming - my clients often say that our work feels refreshingly like a normal conversation!
Often, we can feel "like strangers to ourselves," unsure of why we react in certain ways or struggling with conflicting feelings. Or we can find ourselves stuck in patterns of behaviour or thought that are getting in the way of leading life to the full.
My role is to work with you to help make sense of these kinds of feelings, uncovering patterns and connections from the present and the past. Together, we can explore what lies “beneath the surface” and help you work through the difficulties you are experiencing through a deeper understanding of yourself and of your relathose around you.
I believe in an active, engaged and conversational style of therapy – of “two minds thinking together”, where you can be heard and address what feels most important to you. Above all, I believe that a strong, trusting connection is the foundation of good therapy: it’s from this trust that meaningful change can happen.
